IGE Consulting was appointed by to undertake an intrusive ground investigation to support the redevelopment of land at Trevor Basin, Wrexham. The project forms part of the wider Pontcysyllte & Canal World Heritage Site, with proposals to create an arrival car park and improved access to the heritage area.
The site presented significant challenges due to its extensive industrial history, having operated as a chemical manufacturing facility for over 100 years, as well as an earlier iron foundry. Historical uses included the production of creosote, phenol, aspirin and rubber, alongside known shallow coal workings beneath the site.
IGE delivered a comprehensive ground investigation to access contamination within soils and groundwater, alongside evaluating risks associated with historical mining activity.
Given the sensitivity of the location and its proximity to a World Heritage Site, works were carefully planned and executed to manage both environmental and logistical constraints. The investigation provided detailed data design to inform redevelopment considerations and potential mitigation strategies.
IGE delivered robust, site-specific information to support a detailed understanding of redevelopment constraints, including contamination risks and ground stability.
This enabled the project team to make informed decisions around site viability and future development strategy, helping to progress plans for a key access point to a World Heritage Site while managing environmental and ground-related risks effectively.
