Unlocking an aging 1960s fire station site for a modern emergency services facility

King Street Fire Station, Stockport

King Street Fire Station, Stockport

Project background

IGE Consulting was appointed to support the redevelopment of the King Street Fire Station in Stockport, involving the demolition of the existing 1960s building and construction of a modern fire station and associated facilities.

The project required careful consideration due to the operational nature of the site, with works undertaken around active fire service personnel and ongoing emergency response requirements.

What we did

IGE delivered Phase 1 and Phase 2 geo-environmental assessments to support planning and redevelopment of the site. This included a detailed assessment of ground conditions and potential contamination risks, alongside the preparation of a PFAS statement to address potential impacts on controlled waters.

We worked closely with the project team and regulators to ensure that all environmental considerations were clearly understood and appropriately managed, enabling the project to progress efficiently within a sensitive operational environment.

Outcome

IGE’s work satisfied Environmental Agency requirements and provided the necessary technical assurance to support redevelopment.

This enabled the progression of a key piece of emergency services infrastructure, helping deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose facility in a prominent location.
